emma powell resignation

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Emma Powell has resigned as the party’s international relations spokesperson, citing ongoing harassment, threats, and intimidation connected to her outspoken stance on South Africa’s foreign policy[1].[2]

In a public statement on X (formerly Twitter) posted on Monday, Powell described a pattern of targeted pressure that had escalated in recent months. Her resignation closely follows revelations that she had been spied on by the State Security Agency (SSA), further intensifying what she characterized as a toxic and dangerous environment for MPs who challenge government narratives[1].[3] She said, “Driven by my commitment to the DA’s foundational principles, I accepted these risks as the unavoidable cost of standing up to and exposing the Department of International Relations and the ANC’s relationships with authoritarian regimes.”

Powell had frequently clashed with the ruling African National Congress (ANC), most recently alleging that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s special envoy, Mcebisi Jonas, was denied a US visa, a claim sharply rebuffed by the ANC[1].

Powell added in her statement, “As a woman in politics, I understand viscerally the cost of standing up to bullies and the pressures that come with public life. In an environment that rewards expediency, truly principled leadership is rare and often costly. I will continue to use my time in Parliament to serve our country and our cause, and to empower others, especially young women, with the tools and support they need to lead with bravery and moral clarity”[3].

Her resignation follows a recent trip to the United States, after which she faced allegations of spreading disinformation and was reportedly investigated by the ANC and State Security Agency. Reports indicate that a confidential document outlining these allegations had been submitted to South Africa’s National Security Council[3].[4] Following Powell’s departure, the DA appointed MP Ryan Smith as the new international relations spokesperson[3].
