Inter Miami CF midfielder Sergio Busquets has officially announced he will retire at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season[1]. The legendary Spanish midfielder made the announcement on Instagram, reflecting on his nearly 20-year career with Barcelona, Inter Miami, and Spain. Busquets stated, “I feel like it’s time to say goodbye to my career as a professional soccer player. It has been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story that I always dreamed of. Soccer has gifted me unique experiences in wonderful places, with the best travel companions.”[1]
Busquets, now 37, closes a historic chapter in football. He spent almost his entire club career at FC Barcelona, recording more than 700 appearances and winning multiple La Liga titles, Champions League trophies, and Copa del Rey triumphs. He was also a core part of the Spanish national team that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012[1].
After leaving Barcelona, Busquets joined Inter Miami in 2023 alongside Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, instantly becoming a key leader and helping the club win the inaugural 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. During his time in Miami, he set the league record for most points in a single season. He plays his final months alongside long-time teammates and friends Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Jordi Alba[2].
Busquets’s emotional farewell message included: “Thank you to FC Barcelona, the club of my life. There, I fulfilled the dreams of my childhood… Thank you to the Spain National Team… Thank you to Inter Miami for letting me be part of a new and growing club… These will be my last months on the pitch. I am retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled and above all grateful. Thank you very much, see you soon… All end is a new beginning.”[1]
With Inter Miami already qualified for the 2025 MLS playoffs, Busquets could possibly end his illustrious career by lifting one more trophy. He will share the pitch a few more times with his celebrated teammates, aiming for a final farewell that reflects his impact on club and international football[2].
