The Austrian government has announced renewed plans to ban Muslim headscarves in schools for girls under the age of 14, including in private and Islamic schools in Vienna.[1] Interior minister Claudia Plakolm indicated that teachers would be obliged to report violations and parents could face fines up to €1,000. Experts have expressed skepticism about the legislation’s viability, noting a previous similar law was struck down by the Constitutional Court in 2020 for infringing on freedom of religion.[1]
Austria is gearing up for a number of major festivals and events this autumn, including the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz from September 3–7, St. Rupert’s Fair in Salzburg from September 19–24, and Vienna Wine Hiking Days on September 27–28.[2] The Erntedankfest harvest festival will take place in Vienna on September 6–7 to celebrate Austria’s agricultural traditions.[6]
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will inaugurate its new Visitor Centre on September 17, 2025, at its laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria.[3] The event marks the Agency’s commitment to public education about nuclear science and peaceful uses, featuring interactive exhibits showcasing applications in health, agriculture, environmental protection, and more.[3]
The 21st Salzburg Europe Summit will be held September 28–30, 2025, bringing together leaders and experts from across Europe to discuss current policy challenges and European affairs.[4] The program includes panel discussions, lectures, and cultural events, such as an art exhibition by artists from Brčko-Distrikt, Bosnia and Herzegovina.[4]
On the international front, Austria and Vietnam are working to strengthen cooperation, with Lower Austria’s Governor and the Vietnamese Embassy discussing expanded educational partnerships, local twinning initiatives, and skilled labor exchanges, especially in nursing and caregiving due to Austria’s ageing population.[5] IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, a key example of Austria-Vietnam collaboration, currently offers scholarships and long-term employment opportunities to Vietnamese students.[5]
