In July 2025, X (formerly Twitter) introduced several notable updates including a new “Threads”-like trending topic feature in the “For you” feed, integration plans for its AI-generated text-to-video tool Hotshot, and new policies for ads containing emojis, which will now have a lower quality score and potentially higher pricing[1].

The platform has also begun testing a “x.com” watermark for screenshots on iOS, plus a new “Timestamp” notification feature and promotion of Grok AI with a prominent “Try Voice Mode” button. Recently, X began translating posts for Android and iOS users with Grok AI and introduced AI-powered translations and “AI-Note Writers” for the Community Notes feature[1].

Other changes include a ban on hashtags from promoted tweets and preferential ad rates for “beautiful ads” with no external links or emojis[1]. The platform continues to experiment with user privacy and engagement features, such as hiding liked posts and soon possibly like/retweet counts, an increased group chat limit to 256, higher video quality controls, in-feed bookmark alerts, reply sorting, topic tags in groups, and a dedicated video tab appearing in U.S. navigation bars[2][3].

xAI’s acquisition of the Hotshot AI video tool will soon allow users to generate AI videos directly within X, and advertisers may soon sponsor creator videos on the platform[3]. Recent platform actions also include countering a major DDoS attack and responding to government content removal requests[3].

Controversies and challenges persist: a recent Amnesty International report accuses X of amplifying anti-LGBTI hate in Poland due to its engagement-driven recommender system, urging the company to reform both moderation and its surveillance-based business model[5]. Meanwhile, new research finds that fake news spreads further on X when stories are future-oriented, reflecting ongoing concerns over misinformation on the platform[6].
