The UK National Lottery is set for its largest technological upgrade since 1994, with Allwyn, the new operator, implementing a comprehensive modernization plan from 2-4 August 2025. All National Lottery services—including online access, ticket purchasing, and prize claims—will be taken offline starting at 11pm on Saturday, August 2, and will remain unavailable until late Monday morning to facilitate the transition[1][4][6][7].
This upgrade will introduce new terminal software, migrate vital systems to modern platforms, and involve more than 30 new systems along with complex data migrations, including the transfer of retailer records and millions of transactions. Retailers across the UK will receive new Wave terminals, while those still awaiting hardware will have updated software installed on existing machines[1][4][6].
The system overhaul follows the historic handover of National Lottery operations from Camelot to Allwyn on February 1, 2024. This marked the first operator change in the Lottery’s 30-year history. Allwyn’s 10-year licence brings commitments to significant investment, with modernized technology, enhanced experiences for both retailers and players, and a pledge to raise even more money for good causes[2][8].
Despite the transition, players will still be able to buy Scratchcards in shops and check results until the system goes offline. Video recordings of draw results will remain available on The National Lottery’s YouTube channel. Service interruptions are expected to be short-lived, but some retailers with older terminals may experience brief delays when services resume on August 4[1][4].
Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball, and Set For Life draws continue as scheduled outside the upgrade period, with recent winning numbers and jackpot details available via official channels[3][5].
