denis onyango

Denis Onyango, former Uganda Cranes captain and current Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, has recently taken a temporary role on Uganda’s technical team preparing for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from August 2-30, 2025. Onyango will work with the goalkeeping department, mentoring Uganda’s squad goalkeepers Joel Mutakubwa, Crispas Kusiima, Denis Kiggundu, and Hannington Sebwalunyo. While he is not coming out of international retirement, his presence is expected to significantly boost Uganda’s chances in a tournament where they have struggled to get past the group stages in previous editions[1][7][5].

Onyango remains under contract and actively plays for Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier Soccer League, recently celebrating a Premiership title in the 2024/25 season[8]. His performances during the season have been consistent, with notable goalkeeping stats, including four clean sheets and an 83.3% save percentage[4]. Sources at Sundowns indicate that Onyango is being considered for a different club role post-retirement, but for now, he continues to play and provide leadership on and off the pitch[6].
