Flamengo FC returns to action in the Brasileirão following a month-long break for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The squad faces São Paulo on Saturday, July 12, at 4:30 PM (Brasília time) at Maracanã for the 13th round. Coach Filipe Luís has made two changes to the starting lineup: Gerson is out, and Erick Pulgar is sidelined by injury. The new midfield will feature Jorginho, Allan, and Arrascaeta. There was also some uncertainty at right-back, but Wesley will start. The confirmed Flamengo lineup is: Rossi; Wesley, Léo Ortiz, Léo Pereira, Alex Sandro; Jorginho, Allan, Arrascaeta; Plata, Luiz Araújo, Bruno Henrique.[1]
Flamengo competed in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, earning headlines by defeating Chelsea 3-1 in the group stage — an upset that led to some viral social media exchanges. However, Flamengo was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Bayern Munich. Their performance was notable for Danilo’s go-ahead goal against Chelsea, which fueled online banter between the clubs.[7]
In their final Club World Cup group match, Flamengo drew 1-1 against LAFC, securing a strong finish in their group but ultimately not advancing further. Wallace Yan was the scorer for Flamengo, equalizing shortly after LAFC found the net.[3]
The club’s recent transfer activity has been significant. Jorginho joined on a free transfer from Arsenal and is contracted until June 2028. Danilo also arrived on a free transfer and is under contract until December 2026. Incomings from earlier in the year include forwards Juninho (from Qarabag FK), Gonzalo Plata (from Al-Sadd), and Carlos Alcaraz (from Southampton). Alex Sandro and Michael joined as free agents from their respective clubs. On the outbound side, Carlos Alcaraz transferred to Everton in July after an earlier loan spell.[2][6]
Flamengo continues to be managed by Filipe Luís, who maintains a high win rate (over 63%) since taking charge. Bruno Henrique remains club captain, and Maracanã is the team’s home stadium.[5]
