South Africa is set to end the production of the **green barcoded ID book** by the end of 2025, marking a major shift toward the adoption of the more secure **Smart ID card**[1]. Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber announced during the July 2025 budget vote that the department is accelerating the rollout of digital IDs, with the green ID book being phased out due to its high vulnerability to fraud and identity theft—reportedly being five times more prone to such crimes than the Smart ID[1].
While production of the green ID book will stop, there is currently **no official date announced when existing green ID books will become invalid**. Holders can still use their green books as proof of identity until the Department of Home Affairs sets a formal invalidation date[3]. The department’s updated strategic plan suggests that universal access to Smart ID cards is targeted for 2029, reinforcing that green ID books will not be immediately invalidated alongside the production stop[5].
The transition faces logistical challenges: 101 out of 348 Home Affairs offices are still unable to issue Smart IDs, which means not all South Africans will have immediate access to the new cards[5]. To address this, partnerships with banks will be scaled up—bank branches offering Smart ID services will expand from 30 to 130 by March 2026, with the longer-term goal of equipping 1,000 branches over three years[2].
For South Africans living abroad, the department is opening new Smart ID and passport service facilities in several countries, aiming to reduce wait times for document issuance from over a year to just five weeks[4]. The digital push also includes plans for citizens to order Smart IDs and passports via apps, with options for home delivery[1].
