swiatek

Iga Swiatek has reached her first-ever Wimbledon semifinal after defeating 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, on No. 1 Court[1]. This marks a significant milestone in Swiatek’s career; entering 2025, she had an 18-8 record on grass and had never advanced beyond a semifinal on the surface at a tour-level event. Her victory makes her the fourth active women’s player to reach the semifinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments, joining Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, and Karolina Pliskova[1].

Swiatek was particularly dominant on serve in the opening set, winning all 10 of her first serve points. Though challenged in the second set, she ultimately secured the crucial break to clinch the match. Swiatek noted her hard work to improve on grass, saying, “I feel I really worked hard to progress here on this surface.”[1]

With this win, Swiatek improved her 2025 grass-court record to 8-1, the best she has ever achieved in a single season[2]. Since the start of 2023, she has won 17 of her last 20 matches on grass, a sharp improvement from her earlier career record on the surface[1].

Swiatek seeks to become only the eighth woman in history to capture Grand Slam titles on hardcourt, clay, and grass—an accomplishment no active player has achieved[1]. To reach her first Wimbledon final, she will face either seventh seed Mirra Andreeva or unseeded Belinda Bencic in the semifinals[1].

Swiatek’s achievement this season is notable as she has now reached the semifinals at all four majors, completing her set at just 24 years old[2]. Together with Aryna Sabalenka, she marks the first time since 2006 that multiple women have reached the semifinals in each of the season’s first three Grand Slams[1].
