Southampton FC, known as the Saints, are beginning a new chapter following their relegation from the Premier League after the 2024-25 campaign. The club is now in a rebuilding phase ahead of the 2025-26 Championship season under new manager Will Still, formerly of Lens and Reims[3]. Despite struggles last year, the Saints avoided setting the Premier League’s worst ever points total, eventually overtaking Derby County’s 2007-08 record[4].
This summer has seen significant squad turnover. Only one new signing is confirmed: German centre-back Joshua Quarshie, who joined from Hoffenheim for £3.5 million[3][4]. However, departures dominate the transfer window. Key players leaving include Kamaldeen Sulemana (sold to Atalanta BC for £18 million), Paul Onuachu (Trabzonspor), Kyle Walker-Peters (released), Adam Lallana (retired), Samuel Amo-Ameyaw (Strasbourg), and Joe Lumley (free to Bristol City). Additionally, Juan Larios is set for a loan to Cultural y Deportivo Leonesa, while Joe Aribo and others are also expected to depart[3][4].
These exits have generated a net summer profit of over £20 million, but also left gaps in key areas, most notably at centre-forward. Paul Onuachu’s transfer has made a new striker a priority. Among linked targets, Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ioannidis is seen as a leading candidate. Southampton have been monitoring Ioannidis, but competition and Panathinaikos’ valuation (£20-25 million) make the deal challenging. Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland is a rumoured alternative, though doubts remain over his recent form, and other Championship clubs are interested[2][6].
On the defensive side, Armel Bella-Kotchap could be the next big departure. There is Bundesliga interest—newly promoted Hamburger SV are reportedly keen—but the player’s wages are a stumbling block[3].
Further, Southampton are operating under financial constraints and need to sell players before making additional signings, as highlighted by ongoing speculation around possible big-money sales. Youngster Calum Anderson has joined the academy ranks, signaling continued focus on youth development[7].
Saints supporters remain hopeful that Will Still can galvanize the squad and steer Southampton back to the Premier League, with a blend of youth, smart recruitment, and the passionate backing evident at St Mary’s. The summer transfer window remains open and more changes are expected as the club looks to reinforce key areas and adjust to the demands of the Championship.
