Shoprite has announced the launch of new affordable toiletries as part of its commitment to fighting hygiene poverty in South Africa. The retailer has introduced a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner as well as a body wash, each retailing for just R5 per 50ml sachet. These products are specifically aimed at helping the more than 14 million South Africans affected by hygiene poverty, which includes limited access to essential items like soap, shampoo, and other personal care products[1].
Both the shampoo and body wash come as concentrates in 50ml sachets. When diluted with 150ml of water, each sachet provides enough product for up to 20 washes, working out to approximately 25 cents per wash[1]. The initiative expands Shoprite’s existing R5 range, which previously included items such as bread, meals, and sanitary pads—products that have helped ease the financial burden for many low-income families without any price increases since their introduction[4].
Shoprite’s General Manager for Private Label and Imports, Renaldo Phillips, emphasized that “access to hygiene products is not a luxury—it’s a fundamental human right.” He noted that for many, even a R5 coin can make a significant difference, not only providing nourishment but now also helping to maintain basic hygiene. The retailer’s goal is to continue developing high-quality products at the lowest possible prices to make essential hygiene accessible for all[1].
